10 Makeup MUST HAVES for Looking Your Best On-Camera & On-Stage
Anyone speaking in public or publishing visual content of themselves, should, to a reasonable degree, care about how they look.
Whether you're broadcasting stories on Social Media in your living room with pajama bottoms on, or in front of thousands of people at a live event, you will be better received if you put yourself together.
This is the Going-From-Good-To-Great factor.
Here I've described my process and included the products I used on Chalene Johnson at this year's Marketing Impact Academy Live event- almost every item is marked down from their listed prices. I want your content to go from good to GREAT.
Chalene starts with me completely bare-faced, which I like because I can control every aspect of the application, starting with the skin. First, I use a moisturizer that has to be just right. It can't be too oily under her makeup creating shine spots, or not moist enough that her makeup and powders look crepey afterwards. Clarins is my fave, it's like butta.
Next, I use Hourglass Veil foundation. It is full coverage and hides everything so that her entire face is the same tone, which is really important for your video content. Followed by Smashbox's Halo Hydrating powder. Don't get this product confused, it does not actually hydrate, we already took care of that part. But it does give the APPEARANCE of hydration while doing the important job of setting her foundation to stay put and not come across as shiny. Most setting powders give a powdery finish and we didn't want that, she prefers her skin to look dewey and youthful.
To take that dewey luminosity one step further I highlight her cheekbone, the points of her upper lip and just above her eyebrows with the Mirabella highlighter. There's also a highlight in the Tarte palette below, but the Mirabella is much fleekier. However, the Tarte could be used in everyday life, but that's for another post on everyday looks. Speaking of the Tarte palette, I used the far right bronzer just under her cheekbones and on her forehead. It looks super dark, right? But if you went to MIA Live, it didn't look that dark, did it? That's exactly why you must exaggerate everything on camera. I implore you to get out of your comfort zone here. Just like Chalene encourages you to talk to your audience with extra passion and energy, I want you to apply this same concept to your makeup routine. This is not everyday makeup, this is STAGE makeup, YOU WILL NOT LOOK YOUR BEST IN YOUR VIDEOS AND STORIES IF YOU'RE WEARING EVERYDAY MAKEUP, got it? OK good, sorry for yelling.
Now that your skin is going to look amazing, let's step up your eyebrows. I know you've heard it all before, but your eyebrows will make ALL the difference and I still see a lot of bad ones. This makes me want to drop to my knees and scream, "Whyyy God?!"
Having bad eyebrows is like having bad hair. If you can't do it yourself, HIRE A PROFESSIONAL. And if you don't have eyebrow hair anymore, scrape together the money and get microblading done! Sell one of your designer purses, sell your old wedding dress if you have to (your daughter is not going to want to wear it, trust me). That's how important it is to have good eyebrows. I've established my career on this fact, so without further rantings here's what I used on Chalene's eyebrows. There's always an interim between microblading touchups, so I formulated a fiber brow powder to mimic the appearance for real eyebrow hairs, and it's easy to use!
Since everyone has different size, shape and color eyes, eyeshadows are a bit more case-by-case. Instead of trying to give you some BS catch-all advice (that never works), I must leave it to you. But as a juicy treat I have included one of my favorites of all time, that looks good on almost anyone. Thank you Tom Ford, you are my hero.
As for eyeliner, I can't even tell you how much this Benefit liner has changed my life. The packaging is brilliant. All you do is twist and you have a perfectly sharp line of glide-on-smooth waterproof eyeliner. The tip is this bendable silicone that is shaped at an angle. I'm sure I'm not explaining this right, so just trust me on this. It was revolutionary for me. Disclaimer time- this won't help you if you like smudging your eyeliner, and for that I apologize. But this post is about what I used on Chalene and this is what I used. If you want, I'd be happy cover a smudgy eyeliner product some other time!
Next I highly encourage you to wear lashes, you can choose any kind you like. If you don't know where to start, pick up Chalene's all-time fave below. She brings them for me to apply cause she wants these and these only.
Last is mascara, yes we put on mascara AFTER the false lashes. Why? Because that helps the falsies look more natural, while also brushing and adhering your lashes to the faslies so they all blend together. If you have very straight-down lashes, still do it in this order but curl your lashes and false lashes together once the mascara dries. The dry mascara will act like hairspray helping your lashes stick to the false ones.
....and PERFECT
